Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Restaurant Cleaning Contractor

A contractor interview is most useful when it turns broad promises into specific answers. Bring your actual kitchen and dining-area concerns, then ask how the proposed service would address them. Record the answers so you can compare providers on the same basis.

Ask what the proposal includes and excludes

Start with: “Can you show me the task list for each area?” Ask the provider to distinguish recurring work from periodic detail cleaning and separately quoted services. Clarify whether floors, edges, restroom supplies and equipment exteriors are included.

Follow up with: “What would prevent your team from completing this task?” Access, fixed equipment, unfinished closing duties and restricted materials can all affect the plan. A precise answer is more useful than an assurance that everything will be handled. Review our service-inclusions guide as a discussion aid.

Ask how the team will work in your building

  • What service window is needed after staff finish closing?
  • Who prepares each area before the crew arrives?
  • Which items may be moved, and by whom?
  • How are surface and product instructions incorporated?
  • What happens if access is unavailable or closing runs late?
  • Who confirms that the space is ready for the opening team?

These questions reveal whether the provider has considered the actual operation. Ask for the agreed answers to appear in the proposal or handoff notes, rather than relying on memory from the walkthrough.

Ask how performance is checked

Request an explanation of supervision, inspections and feedback handling. “Who reviews the work?” and “How do I report a missed task?” are straightforward starting points. Ask what information helps the team investigate and who follows up.

Discuss a recurring issue as a hypothetical example. If buildup keeps returning in one area, would the response involve reviewing technique, frequency, access or a maintenance cause? Look for a process that investigates the problem rather than simply repeating a general promise of better quality.

Ask for evidence and commercial clarity

Request relevant documentation and references where appropriate, and evaluate what is actually supplied. Do not infer insurance, training or specialist capabilities from a logo or a general marketing statement. Ask the provider to explain any qualifications relevant to the work you are commissioning.

Clarify how additional work is approved, what supplies are included and how the scope is reviewed. Keep your operational comparison separate from any legal review of the agreement. Our provider-selection guide explains how to turn these answers into a shortlist.

Questions about the interview itself

Should I ask every provider the same questions?

Use the same core questions, then add site-specific follow-ups. Consistency makes differences easier to understand.

What if an answer is vague?

Ask for a written example tied to your rooms, tasks or service window before deciding.
